A quick listen to any top forty style country music station shows an "interesting" trend. It seems that a large percentage of C and W mentions God and or Jesus. I just listened to a jumpy little tune (sorry, I cant give you title or artist) about a girl and boy not "having a song". God gets in there. Another talks about a road where the singer tells us he had his first beer, and found Jesus on that road. Both events are told in the same breath.
While another list things that are wrong in the world with the coda, "God must be busy." I'm guessing the author of this song doesn't understand irony.
I've listened to CW most of my life. Hey, I was born in North Carolina. NASCAR country. My George Jones albums are displayed proudly right beside my John Lennon's.I was honestly saddened by the recent death of Porter Wagoner. We owe him plenty for giving us Dolly.Country music and Rock music have always been first cousins.
But I gotta tell you. This trend is gonna ruin CW. Its always been about cheat'n and drink'n with an occasional nod to gospel roots. But a nod.
This is most likely a last gasp. But i could be wrong.
There are rock and roll songs that make me cry, or at least want to. These include Queens Radio Gaga. "You've yet to have your finest hour" line always gets me. I shiver inside.
I get the same reaction with Toto's "Africa".
The line "He only did what he had to do." from Willie Nelsons and Merle Hagard's Poncho and Lefty leaves me a lump of jelly.
I get way too emotional when the Association sing "Cherish".Or almost anything they do.
Theres a recording of Carly Simon doing a medley of "Coming Around Again" and" Itsy Bitsy Spider", maybe you've heard it. But you've never head it with me in the room, because I always leave as soon as it starts playing. I don't want anybody to see me like this.
Dave Bowie's, "Young Americans"; John Lennon's "Watching the Wheels". I could go on.
There are others, but these are most likely the most unusual. I mean, if you don't get a little misty listening to Don McLean's "Starry Starry Night" my only question to you is "Just how much did you get for that soul, buddy?"
The question your most likely asking is why. Well, I can tell you. I can point to a place in time or a small part of my soul that I keep from people, and tell you with great detail, why these words and music reduce me to a useless pool of saline.
I can tell you.
But I wont.
I think a part of being human is having a part that is only for you. Not hidden so much as just kept.
I could be wrong, but I hope not.
So now I'll go strap on my Ipod and a have a good cry.
Its good to be a human.
